Fines & Happy Dollars

Sue was Sergeant of Arms and her questions were: what is the best selling cookie in America-Oreo, what is the most popular cookie baked at home-chocolate chip, who sells seasonal cookies-Girl Scouts, when did the girl scout cookie sales start-1936, why is the recipe on the back of a pack of Nestle chocolate chips called toll house cookies-they were first baked in a small house where tolls were paid, why is there a string on a box of animal crackers-to hang them on a Christmas tree.

Ray had a happy dollar because the Phillies are the National League East Champions. Sharon and Sue had happy dollars because their dogs Katie, Maggie, Ellie and Sophie were blessed at their church last night. MaryLee had a happy dollar because she is glad to be home.

Substance Abuse

Meg Will talked to the club about substance abuse prevention for children. Meg has a degree in family development, and works in 5 counties with children in public health. Meg works with a group called Action for Community Transition. This group sponsors a program called Red Ribbon Week which was started 22 years ago. This program is presented in all the local schools. Teachers talk to their students about drugs and how to keep themselves safe. There is a fall festival in the park in Northumberland on Oct. 25. There will be a 5k race and lots of activities for adults and kids. Beaver Motors participates in the Red Ribbon Week by putting all their red cars and trucks out front, and also there will be red balloons on the vehicles on the lot. A big part of helping kids avoid drugs is to form good relationships with them.

Rotary Leadership Institute

Rotary Leadership Institute will be on Oct. 11. If enough people are interested, courses 1, 2 and 3 will be offered.

New Members

Vinnie and Onie Lauver are interested in becoming members of Rotary.
