Drug Court

Mike Scholley was in charge of programs and his guests were Judge Woefel and Union County Probation Officer Scott Kerstetter, who talked about the Snyder County Drug Court, which started last week. This is a program to try to council and rehab drug and DUI offenders. The first Drug Court was started in Miami, Dade County in 1990-1991The cost to house an offender in a county prison for one year is about $25,000.00, and $40,000.00 in a state prison. The percentage of return offenders after Drug Court is much less than when they are sent to prison. Offenders who have committed violent crimes will not be allowed in Drug Court. Bad checks and theft are often crimes committed by offenders who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. A lot of offenders are in trouble because of a lack of income, health problems, they might be homeless, and usually lack any support. The usual time for an offender to have a court date is 6 months from the time of arrest. Drug Court hopes to have offenders in front of the judge in 30-45 days after being arrested. Offenders will still be convicted of crimes, sometimes even felonies, and they may receive 12-18 months or up to 3 years probation or parole. The CMSU will be helping the Drug Court Program. Only residents of Snyder and Union Counties will be admitted to this program.
