Drug Court Program

Mike Sholley talked to the club about a new county program. The Drug Court Program will hopefully be under way by July of 2008. The program will target drug users and try to get them into this program where they will get supervision, support and possible punishment by a group that will include the judge, the district attorney, some members of the MHMR programs, and the commissioners. People targeted for this program will be non-violent and have not committed sexually violent crimes. People between the ages of 18-50 will be considered. This program will be an alternative to jail, which costs the county about $60.00 a day per inmate. After screening, a team meeting with the judge, and MHMR assessment people in this program will be required to meet weekly with the judge, an assessment team, the District Attorney, and MHMR members. They will also require weekly urine drug tests. If the people in the program meet their weekly requirements they may be rewarded, but also punished if they fail. Union and Snyder counties are working together in this program, and each county will have about 15 people participating in the program. Snyder County is hoping to get a $300,000.00 grant to get this program started.
